The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden
5.0
For anyone reading this book: Trigger warning for religion/Christianity. It can be hard to get through if you're triggered by it.
It took a while to settle into the writing and the patriarchy of the story but Vasiliya is such a great main character, she got me through it all.
It's a great winter read and I felt the chill of the Russian winter through the pages. I really loved the folklore of the story and how it challenged Christianity as the only religion to be believed. And, of course, the focus on family rather than love. I hope all the books keep it that way but I've yet to read a trilogy that doesn't eventually end with a love story of some sort.
