I knew nothing about the topic of the book and am very glad I read it. Kate Moore really brought the story and the very real characters to life. It was sometimes hard to read, both with present day hindsight and with how many additional obstacles these women encountered. I was mad most of the time while reading this. The medical descriptions were hard to bear - but I am glad the author did not sugarcoat what these women went through. Definitely one of the most engaging nonfiction books I have ever encountered. I listened to the audiobook narrated by the author herself and liked her narration. I thought the book could have been shorter, but then again, the problem still existed after the first 'story arc' was finished and history sadly kept repeating itself. So in a way staying with this story for so long also reflected how long the story lasted in real life.
