The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

5.0

Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novels are proving to be the most realistic and entertaining audiobooks I’ve come across: Daisy Jones and the Six relating the development of a seventies rock band, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo focusing on an iconic Hollywood actress. Both almost tricked me into believing these were real stories and had me yearning to hear the music and see the movies. But as that isn’t possible, the best I could do is keep listening, which made the audiobooks utterly addicting.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo begins in the present day, when to her surprise a struggling journalist Monique Grant gets the opportunity to interview Evelyn Hugo – a retired actress with almost mythical fame. The opportunity turns out to be more than a simple interview when Evelyn reveals her desire to tell her entire life story, encompassing a total of seven marriages, and to have Monique write a book about it. The story moves back and forth between this perspective and Evelyn’s memories. I was captivated from the beginning and shocked by a plot twist I could not see coming at all. Also, the LGBTQ+ representation is absolutely brilliant.
