The Ingenue by Rachel Kapelke-Dale
3.0
A quick read but some warnings: the synopsis states “she is forced to re-examine her past—and the romantic relationship that changed the course of her life—“
Reader: that romantic relationship was abuse and the book/author has an interesting way of sidestepping that for a large portion of the book.
I struggled with this read but it was ultimately quick and I was curious how this author would turn Saskia (the narrator) into a heroine.
I gave it three stars for the pacing and themes challenged. What was missing for me was character development. A mother who so thoroughly loved her child wouldn’t have cut her out of her life while she was dying. I just couldn’t buy into some of the decisions made.
