The Patient by Jasper DeWitt

4.0

I think the hardest part about reviewing shorter psychological horror books is that it’s hard to explain what I enjoyed without spoilers.

This was my first book by Jasper Dewitt and I enjoyed it. I liked the format of this being based on a series of blog entries - giving it an authentic “based on a true story” feel. Newbie psychologist, Parker, in a county run inpatient hospital meets and then thinks he can successfully treat the “untreatable patient”.

I enjoyed the twists and turns, not knowing who to trust, embracing unsubstantiated assumptions, and the culmination of finally having answers.

Unnerving in the best ways.

Narration:
Edoardo Ballerini was a great choice for this this. He has this mix of calm and collected that seems perfect for a therapist. Yet he simultaneously brings the listener into the far-fetched theories, mistrust, suspicion, and fear. Loved his performance.

CW (spoilers?):
multiple mentions of SA. adult (parental) against child and child against child
