Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century by Alice Wong

5.0

I have historically not been a fan of essay collections. I usually find them lopsided where some of the pieces are enjoyable and others are a slog to get through, or they feel out of place within the overall work.

That is NOT the case for this collection of works by a variety of disabled writers. There is no filler - every single piece is informative and entertaining, offering a new perspective from a whole array of disabilities and intersections of race, sexuality, and gender identity. Reading allows us to learn more about the world around us but it also gives us the opportunity to empathize with people who have radically different experiences. I felt so grateful for the writers and their stories as I was reading this. This book is an absolute must-read for everyone, whether you are disabled or not (and ESPECIALLY if you are not).
