Stones in Water by Donna Jo Napoli
5.0
Stones In Water.... This book... Is one of my favorites. It isn't long, but it packs such a punch...
It was a raw story. Deep, strong, and throbbing. It set the story and you knew the characters... Like you were the one standing there, seeing the Jews behind wires and cages. Like you were the one standing beside Roberto, all the while. The story telling matched the story, and I was left basically crying.
This time of history, World War II, is one of the most interested to me. I'm intrigued by this time and have read and am still reading many books (non-fiction and fiction alike) about that time. Stones In Water was by far one of the best fictional books set in WWII I've read. It was from a perspective I've never found before: honestly, I don't know any book that took the point of view as this book. Roberto is Italian, and his best friend is a Jew, and they are taken captive/enslaved by the Germans... I learned stuff in such a way it was real. Not just fiction, not just reality- but a heart wrenching mix. A dark time in history, with a story stand point that was unbelievably captivating, anguishing, and strong.
This book was so good. I didn't read it for school, but it had an impact on me, and can very easily be a read that could accompany a WWII study... Or a good book to grab your mind and heart and remember what times we've had.
