Was Poe a creep?

I know it's meant to scare people but the only emotion these short stories woke on me were disgust for Poe. I would have rather not read explicit ways to inflict pain on women, animals or anyone. I kept reading until the end because so many people have recommended his work, but I got disappointed each page I turned until I finished it.

If someone believes Poe has better work comment a suggestion and I might give it a chance, but for the near future I don't see myself reading more from him nor respecting his fandom.
