Between Sisters by Kristin Hannah
4.0
I have really enjoyed Kristin Hannah's historical fiction books. Between Sisters is a novel, and the only reason it could possibly historical fiction at this point is because it was released in 2003.
It's kind of interesting reading older fiction that doesn't really stand the test of time. The story itself certainly does. But there are so many references of the time that makes the book very dated.
Her writing style does hold up. The characters are vivid, and the story actually turns out to be quite powerful. This book is the definition of bitter sweet.
When I started reading, I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to get into it. And in a way, I don't feel I ever really settled in to reading this book the way I have many others.
I have such a pet peeve regarding characters who don't communicate. In everyday life, I so deeply value authenticity and clarity that I struggle to engage with book in which the characters are trying to figure out how to tell each other the truth.
As the title says, this book is about sisters who have a lifetime of messy history between them. The story brings them back from essentially estrangement.
The cast of supporting characters all have challenges and devastations that they are working through and it really added more dimension to the story.
All in all, if you enjoy Beaches or Steel Magnolias, this one could be a good addition to media of that theme.
