The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole, Michael Gamer

4.0

Published in 1764, The Castle of Otranto is the first novel in the Gothic genre. Yet, the writing feels more like reading a Shakesperian play than a novel. Thematically too is reminiscent of Shakespeare as it has also borrowed some parts of various scenes from Shakespeare's plays. Moreover, I think it is hard to miss the similarity of Manfred and Henry VIII in regards to Manfred's marriage though the story changes direction from the true history. This classic is very entertaining. It combines a spooky atmosphere, comedy, and tragedy sending the reader on a rollercoaster. I do wish though that there were more scenes of the "ghostly" and spooky parts. I think that this book would turn into a marvelous and fun play in the theater.
