The Boleyn King by Laura Andersen

3.0

3.5/5

This is a historical and alternate fiction set in the Tudor court. It raises the question: What if Anne Boleyn gave birth to a healthy son?, What if Anne lived to an old age and was never killed?

I'm a sucker for the Tudors, specially Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, ever since I saw The other Boleyn movie and watched the Tudors series when I was at home recuperating from surgery. I'm Dominican, so until then I hadn't given too much thought or knew much about that period or that family. Now I'm fascinated by it.

I liked this novel, it transported me to that period of time, it was interesting and well paced. I like the characters, the setting and the plot.

There's a romance in here, but it doesn't takes up the whole story nor overwhelms it.
Spoiler There's a love triangle-ish, but it wasn't annoying. The only thing I don't like is that theme or trope of childhood friends falling in love. I don't understand it and it isn't believable to me, specially if they saw, at some point, each other as siblings.

I gave it 3.5 stars because there's an aspect of the romance I didn't like (see hidden spoiler above).

Overall I enjoyed it, it was intriguing, entertaining and interesting. I will continue with the series.
