Character driven vampire story with interesting themes that undoubtably influenced many more recent vampire stories. This was a weird blend for me. I loved some parts and barely made it through others. Claudia as a character was fascinating but I wish we would have gotten her POV rather than her uncomfortable relationship with Louis and Lestat which bordered on pedophilia. I think in general Louis is a great character - the unwilling, depressed vampire who is now stuck in immortal limbo. Yet, the writing style didn't quite manage to convey this in depth. In general, I thought the pacing was very inconsistent and I I felt quite distanced from the characters - which isn't great in a character-driven book.

Note on diversity: I feel conflicted about the on-page representation of homosexuality (surprising for the publication date) which was so intertwined with murder, violence and perversity (incl. pedophilia) that it felt like homosexuality itself was portrayed as inherently sinful. A quick research suggests that this wasn't the intention but it left a bitter taste for me.
