This is definitely one of those books that gets you so into the story that you will feel genuine anger for the insufferable main character. I was ROOTING for her downfall, praying to the universe that she was going to get caught or at the very least, punched in the face. R. F. Kuang did an amazing job of making me truly dislike the main character for all the audacity she brought. Cause miss June was a hater from the beginning of the book until the end. She was exuding jealous vibes about Athena. Like you didn't have time to look up how to do the Heimlich maneuver but had enough time to steal her manuscript? And not the manuscript being about Chinese immigrants! I had mad beef with her when she was editing the paper and her and the editor were like yeah lets make the white characters look better and get rid of the brutal real scenes in the book so its more digestible for the audience as a whole. I was flabbergasted, are you serious? Irritated me.
Like bro...come on. Her anxiety about the whole thing on twitter and goodreads and every other site that reviewed books was incredibly well written because I felt it! Those scenes made me feel anxious as well. I honestly would've preferred that she came out with her tell all book cause I felt like yeah she probs would've still made profit off it, but she still would've been in the limelight that she so desperately wanted to be in. The character also glossing over the fact that the main people supporting her were like right wing television and real conservative white people, that was the sing she was doing something wrong for sure. I was so happy when she was exposed but also hella annoyed when she was plotting her comeback, because she would be perceived as a victim depending how she wrote her story and her audacity as a white woman.
I think the book as a whole gave an interesting perspective on how literature, specifically literature about diversity is different when not written by a POC author. How the white author is perceived when writing a book about Chinese history and the valid points and concerns POC were making and how her main points and defense were acting as if her as a white woman was the victim and trying to use "well we wouldn't fault a black person for writing about a white person" argument, dumb.

Overall, for me, 4.75/5 and I love R. F. Kuang. I will read anything she writes.
