The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes
5.0
I love Jojo Moyes and her Me Before You series, but didn't think I'd be interested in this book since historical fiction is more of a mood read for me. Well, I guess the mood hit when my online book club decided to read this for one of their monthly discussions. I'm really glad I decided to read this one (via audio).
As usual, Moyes was able to pull at my heart strings, have me on the edge of my seat and provide a little chuckle now and then. Based upon true stories of the WPA and the Pack Horse Library, Moyes created a wonderful representation of how the women of those times provided basically the first libraries (bookmobiles) in rural areas for those in the Appalachian Mountains between 1935 and 1943.
The love and friendships that developed between the women working so hard together to help the less fortunate was awe-inspiring. I could imagine the physical, emotional and mental pain they were experiencing for each other and in their relationships during a time in history when women were to believed to only have babies and cook dinner. I loved knowing this was a starting point for libraries to reach so many who had no access to books due to finances or location.
I highly recommend this book!!
