The Helm of Midnight by Marina J. Lostetter

5.0

This was a reread for me as I wanted a recap before the sequel as I remember absolutely nothing about it apart from I really bloody enjoyed it at the time and I did this time around too

This is up there as one of the goriest books I've ever read, Marina sure knows how to butcher people in a unique way with vivid detail and as much as you try not to, you just have to imagine the scenes. It isn't overkill though, there's just the right amount to stop you from becoming immune to the shock

The magic is one of my favourites. It's about enchantment magic that incorporates peoples personalities or talents and it allows for quite a dark and varied system

The story is told from 3 very different characters from different timelines, It's not confusing at all and each one is equally as exciting to follow. All 3 POVs are slowly woven into the main story that all lead to a very thrilling, emotional and satisfying ending

It is quite a slow burn of a book at times, it can feel quite long especially as this is murder mystery as they are usually quite fast paced but it still managed to hold my attention. It could almost be read as a standalone so I am very intrigued as to where the story goes next
