The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow
5.0
4.5 stars.
I absolutely loved this story and the writing. It's original and had a delightful, old-school adventure feel to it that I found charming and more than willing to consume.
The characters were well-developed and likable and the villains were everything you could hope for.
It would have been a solid ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ read for me, but honestly the main protagonist (January) was obnoxiously stupid at times. If I had a dollar for everytime she stopped paying attention and was foolishly captured or caused harm to someone else, I could take myself out to lunch. While a certain naivety is to be expected, she literally made dangerous and stupid decisions on the regular. When one character was injured (unnecessarily) because of January's actions, I wanted to cuss and throw the book.
Still, it's a completely compelling tale of love and loss and adventure, rooted in possibilities and dreams and hope. I'll happily read more from this author.
