I read the first 200 pages and skipped to the last chapter to read the end. Even then I was left with questions....did she make it? I've slogged through many difficult reads but I couldn't feel any connection with the main character here......I'm able to endure a hard read but I need a trade off in terms of an emotional connection. This book left me with a distant and cold feeling .....I would've appreciated it more had it been written in the first person..... another reviewer said it's like reading a "scary history book." This is an important read so I'm rating it 3 stars, but it wasn't a good read for me. I was very underwhelmed after having seen it on many lists for highly recommended reads and reading other high reviews. Better reads for me include Homegoing, Invention of Wings, The Kitchen House, and Glory Over Everything.
