The Wedding People by Alison Espach

5.0

Phoebe is a professor of 19th century literature. After she miscarries the last viable embryo and her husband cheats on her, she dresses in a strapping green silk dress and heels, books an $800/night hotel room, and flies across the country with the plan to kill herself. When she arrives at the hotel she discovers the entire thing has been booked for a wedding except her room. Riding the elevator with the bride, Phoebe admits that she’s not there for the wedding but to lull herself. It’s the first time she’s chosen honesty over politeness and realizes the liberation of speaking her mind.

The rest of the book is a comical series of Phoebe becoming wrapped up in the events of the wedding people while simultaneously discovering the freedom of living with authenticity instead of with the intention of pleasing others.

I laughed out loud several times. This book is witty, fast paced, just enough cliche to not roll your eyes, and overall delightful. It was the PERFECT Christmas break book to read snuggled up by the fire and feel light but thoughtful at the same time.
