Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
5.0
“We believe the one who has the power. He is the one who gets to write the story. So when you study history, you must always ask yourself, 'Whose story am I missing? Whose voice was suppressed so that this voice should come forth?” — Yaw (character in the novel)
Incredibly moving and powerful, Homegoing transcends generations and narrators to tell a deeply thoughtful history. Each chapter can exist as a standalone short story, but when combined together, the novel provides an even more cutting and sharp lens into slavery, segregation, racism, culture, religion, love, and family. Ultimately Yaa Gyasi weaves tales that leave you mourning and rooting for every narrator, while also questioning the stories that you understand and have been taught to be true. Highly recommend this read.
