A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

5.0

This book is one of the best books I've ever read in my life. I can't even begin to describe how much I loved it, but I'll give you some details:
This book had some of the most beautiful passages about love that I have ever seen. I cried multiple times reading them.
"He was a man of black and white. And she was colour. All the colour he had."
Now can you see why I was crying?
The plot was elegantly constructed, shifting from a present timeline to sections of Ove's life story, each chapter telling its own independent tale. Put together, the result is a book so stunning in its realistic simplicity, so dark and yet so warm, so heartbreaking and yet so persistently jovial. A celebration of life, what it means to each of us. The story is peopled by a riot of gloriously colorful characters, each with a story to tell, each perfect in their endearing imperfections.
Frederik Backman's intelligent yet unassuming eye focuses on minuscule details of character, time and place which hold the spell of his tale together. No word too many and none too few. Every syllable is unaffectingly yet carefully placed for maximum momentum upon reading.
A Man Called Ove is an absolute treat, and the kind of book that transforms you. The kind of book it is difficult to find fault in. Easy to read yet substantial and thought-provoking, I believe it is indispensable for every shelf, for every home.
