This book flashes back between the past (of Neema’s origin story during the NY Slave Conspiracy of 1741) to the present (2017) and follows a case that invites parallels between her time as a slave and the Civil Rights Movement. The mystery really took hold, and I didn’t see the plot developments coming. There was a smidge of romance, formidable opponents were introduced, and enough of the mystery was left open to continue on to the next book. It was good, just heavy at some points due to its historical aspect. I’m not a big series reader, but it piqued my interest enough for me to want to continue on to the next book.
