Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare
5.0
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5 stars
Chain of Gold is the first in a new Shadowhunter series set in the 1900’s London. This time, we follow the children of Tessa and Will on their adventures in the world.
I have waited some time before reading this book. This book has been sitting on my shelf since it came out in 2020. I was a bit anxious to start reading the series. Also, because I know Cassandra Clare often ends the second book on a major cliffhanger, so I wanted to read the series closer to the third book coming out. The Infernal Devices is my favourite series of all the books she has written in the Shadowhunter world, so knowing we would go back to London and those characters gave me really high hopes for this book. Well, it didn’t disappoint!
The plot, while in the same world as the other books, was just as new and unique as before. I keep being surprised at how Cassanda Clare can think of these new plots every time and manages to not have similar plots. The plot was super engaging! While it had me guessing and I had some suspicions, it was super fun to read. The angst and setting fitted perfectly with everything. If this plot would’ve happened in modern time, it wouldn’t have the impact it had while set in 1900’s London.
The pace of this book was a bit slower than I was used to in the Shadowhunter books, but I believe the slower pace was needed. There are a lot of new characters we meet and the pace being slower helped getting to know all of them. Also, the slower pace really adds to the vibe at the beginning were nothing is wrong.
One of the things I love most about Cassandra Clare’s books is the cast of characters she manages to create in every new series or trilogy. This cast of characters was no different. The way all the characters are vastly different, but fit together like clogs is just amazing. I loved every bit about their relationship and friendships! I also loved how the characters we met in The Infernal Devices were just as present. They were different from when they were young, but somehow just as they were then at the same time. The little snippets of Will, Jem and Tessa… loved it. They had me weeping as well though.
The romantic relationships were still really building in this book and I like how nothing has really manifested yet. I have hopes for certain people to get/come together so we’ll have to wait and see if that happens. I also love how the tropes used in other books (love triangle, forbidden love etc) weren't as present in this book. It sets the book apart from those already out, which I really appreciate.
Overall, I loved everything about book! The plot was super engaging, the mystery had me guessing what would happen next and the characters are just amazing.
