Aboulela weaves the multiple voices of her narration expertly together as she constructs this spell-binding novel. 

While I love historical fiction I know very little about Sudanese history and related Muslim teachings and responses, and yet I could follow and care about the characters in this well-written novel. I especially appreciated how the lives of the female characters were brought to life with great depth.
