Juana and Lucas by Juana Medina
4.0
I found the character of Juana to be utterly delightful and believable. She's precocious without being obnoxious and I enjoyed reading about the things that excite her as well as the things that stress her out. I laughed at lines like, "When a grown-up says something is going to be fun, it means there will be NO FUN AT ALL. Not even a single bit of fun. Nada de fun." I love that the book is set in Bogotá and that Juana loves her city. The Spanglish is just the right amount and I was easily able to suspend my disbelief that Juana is complaining about learning "the Wnglish" in a book that is written in English. Overall, I would recommend this to any young reader or reader who is young at heart. I would have given this book five stars if not for the fact that my 9-year-old daughter was not as enthusiastic about this book as I was.
