The Bright Side of Disaster by Katherine Center
3.0
Katherine Center's "The Bright Side of Disaster" follows Jenny Harris, who finds herself suddenly single and pregnant when her fiancé Dean walks out. As Jenny gives birth and dives into the deep end of single motherhood, the novel explores her path to building a new life.
The strengths lie in Center's charming prose and Jenny's relatable struggles as a new mom - the sleepless nights, leaky boobs, and fragile moments are rendered authentically. Her gradual growth, from feeling adrift to finding her footing by joining a mommy group and bonding with a supportive neighbor, tugs at the heartstrings. However, I wasn't a fan of the premise of Jenny being callously abandoned while pregnant.
Despite its flaws, the book still delivers an uplifting message about resilience, self-discovery, and the families we build for ourselves. Center's charming voice makes "The Bright Side of Disaster" a breezy, comforting read, even if it didn't become an absolute favorite for me.
Rating: 3/5 stars. A warm tale of single motherhood, though the abandoned-while-pregnant trope and uneven pacing prevented me from loving it wholeheartedly.
