Women of Good Fortune by Sophie Wan

4.0

Lulu is a getting married; she is 27 (A Leftover women according to popular Chinese standards) and getting hitched to Shanghai's most eligible bachelor Harv. Between her Type A future Mother in Law Peng Ayi, and her own Mother and Brother who is mooning over the increase in social standing, Lulu is keen to escape.

Her friend Jane is not faring well; described as unattractive, her parents included a flat in Shanghai as part of her dowry in order to attract her happy go lucky husband Zihao. Jane spends all of her time in crowdpurchase designer item chatgroups and dreams of another life. Rina is an aspiring engagement manager, panicking about her eggs and provides the calm in the trio.

When they come up with a plan to steal the red envelope money from Lulu's high society wedding, the trio are pushed to maintain cover up to the wedding and the story dips in and out of their own individual desperation. However, they also miss signals from helpers who are close by.

My heart really felt for Jane and her internal monologue was uncomfortable, but also felt familiar to me. I also relate to Rima ambitions and drive to prove herself over and over again, against mediocre men who are not even half as qualified.

Ultimately this was a funny, badass story about ride or die friendships, kicking back at the patriarchy and choice. It's tongue in cheek, fast paced and I really loved the primary characters.
