It’s incredibly difficult to adapt a beloved classic. It’s brave to try, and many of the updates are creative. Overall, though, both the plot and the characters fell quite flat for me, and I felt the writing style and some of the character choices were distracting. I did not enjoy it as an adaptation. I don’t think I would have liked it were I unfamiliar with the source material either, but I am probably too biased to judge it fairly on its own.
