The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
5.0
OH MY GOD! This was such a good surprise!
Yes, I saw all the hype, I was intrigued by it but I honestly thought it was going to disappoint me, mainly because overly hyped books tend to disappoint me.
The Silent Patient did NOT disappoint.
I'll be talking spoilers from now on, so tread carefully.
I enjoyed the way it was written, I absolutely love it when books are written in the first person, It's just an entirely different experience for me.
What I did not enjoy was that it became kind of ridiculous.. You're telling me that Alicia writes the conversation quotes in her journal? In what world does that make sense? If he had wanted it to be believable, conversation quotes would not have been used in the diary chapters.
Moving on to the plot, it was totally original and fresh which a thing that you rarely ever hear about thriller novels.
I really loved the idea that Alicia was literally the titular Silent Patient, although it felt like Theo was the main character, not Alicia, which makes sense.
My main question is, is Theo a villain?
To me, he has the qualities of a villain, but he does not lose it until he basically kills Alicia.
I was 100%, completely and utterly shocked at the reveal that Theo was the masked man, like I did not see that one coming.
Back to the villain question, to me he's a very complicated character, extremely flawed which I liked because our main character was not this wholesome person, he's been through trauma and he worked out his life and now he's happy and in love with Kathy.
Then she cheats on him for unexplained reasons (why didn't we get more info about it), and he completely loses it, my question is.. If Kathy hadn't cheated on him, and he continued to live blissfully, would he have done what he had done?
I was a little bit surprised that Alicia was actually the one who shot Gabriel, but I loved the part Theo played in that scene, it was yet another good twist.
All in all, this was a really good book, full of fresh ideas and concepts and I honestly am looking forward to see what Alex Michaelides comes up with next.
