Sag Harbor by Colson Whitehead
3.0
This is a tough one. I am glad this book exists, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a bit of a slog to get through. It wasn't that it was full of tough concepts or difficult language, it was just that....well... nothing really happens.
It's just a series of vignettes from a summer in Sag Harbor.
I appreciate this snapshot from a place, heretofore unbeknowst to me, where upper class blacks have vacationed for generations.
I am happy to live in a world where a book like this receives funds from a publisher of note and is on the shelves to be thumbed through and purchased.
I can't say that I didn't laugh and smile and appreciate Whitehead's skill. The dude knows his stuff. He's legit.
It's just, would it have killed him to have an actual storyline? I don't feel like it woulda, but I dunno. Maybe I just didn't get it.
