For those who find regular flashbacks confusing, this book is not for you, especially in audio where you get interrupted if you aren't focusing on the book completely. However, the voice for the audio book is completely fantastic!
I loved the world building, how the demons, witches, and blessed abilities were absolutely fascinating!
I do feel like I need to read this one again to give it a true rating because I did get confused on if Kai was murdered in the beginning, and how his heart pearl came to be along with the politics.
Because I have a very interrupted home life raising a 3 yo, I'll be adding this on my repeat list when she's older and I bet it'll be less confusing in the politics then.
I do recommend this for people who love the idea of a semi water faring demon who gets persuaded to join the toppling of a corrupt hierarchy! Anyone who's dealt with persecution of any kind will find kinship with Kai and his friends.
