Another “horror” book from the club.
I quote horror because there is enough of a horrific feel to the book but I think it’s so much more.
Everytime I had to talk about this book I explained it as a book that leaves behind a dirty oily film over the mind and soul.
The book feels raw, not in a bad way, but the projected emotions feel primal and unchecked. Somehow the images that kept coming back to me were of a woman with damp oily hair stuck to her face snarling as her eyes projected a hateful look.
The tragic events each character is put through, the horrific story that has made them who they are and the way that hate and darkness taints their every decision while at the same time seeming completely justified due to their knowledge just stuck with me. I could sometimes say the book actually affected my mood, I felt angry and hateful, I wanted their curses to be successful.
All this is to say I felt the book was great. As always I am focusing on how it made me feel because I don’t feel qualified to criticize anyone’s writing in a technical way, but from what the book left in me,I have to say it actually was a memorable book.
This is a book I would be extremely cautious of recommending, precisely because of all the negative feelings in it and how it chooses to impart its knowledge. If anyone has the right mood to let themselves fall into a dark emotional telling of a tragic story, this one is definitely for them.
