Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling
I saw this highly recommended (but without much context) somewhere, so I checked it out for my 11yo, and he LOVED it and insisted I read it.
I live for well-done middle grade books, and this one was really great. I tend to prefer serious, soulful kid books over fluffy ones, but this was a nice combination: a story about meaningful topics but told with a light enough hand that it shouldn’t turn kids off or make them feel like they’ve been sat in front of an afterschool special to Learn Things. It was also refreshing to have the main parent-child relationships be so healthy and open.
If you want to know what the book is about, you can easily find that info elsewhere, but I’d recommend just jumping in and letting it surprise you.
