A few stand out stories at the beginning and the end, alond with The Red Pony (which I would give near 5 stars) brought this rating up to a 4. Though some stories I felt lacking, overall I cannot say that I was left unsatisfied with Steinbecks writing. The Red Pony, the longest of the short stories, showed Steinbeck at his best when he has the space to show it.
