I am very much enjoying the Sweater Weather series. Book 2, The Fall Back Plan, by Melanie Jacobson is a highly engaging story that I liked a lot. The storyline is actually my favorite aspect. Having been bullied myself when I was in the 4th grade, I appreciate the idea of a brutally-bullied woman going back to her hometown to show everyone what a success she has become. As an adult, I know that what others think doesn’t matter, but my inner-4th-grader absolutely adores the idea of putting my bully in her place. I also like how Jacobson illustrates through her main character, Jolie, that we often only ever know half a story. This is a really good reminder for me. Humans often judge a situation or a person by only half the truth. We miss so much when we rush to judgement before we gather all the facts. Jolie was so sure she knew the whole truth about her past but, boy, is she wrong! I really appreciated following Jolie on her very realistic journey from certainty to vulnerability, humility, and acceptance. I found her journey to be incredibly realistic and relatable. In addition to the storyline, I also loved the cozy mystery aspect. I had a fun time trying to guess at who the culprit is. I admit I had no idea the whole time. What fun! Last, but not least, I really, really love Lucas Cole. Hubba, hubba (LOL)! He is described as looking like a young Raylan Givens (main character from the AMAZING tv show, Justified), so he’s definitely hot. But what makes this Sheriff particularly wonderful is his patience. Wowsers (!!!), does Lucas have patience. And he is sweet, and considerate, and respectful, and honest. I love how much he adores his niece and how much he is willing to give her the best life possible. But I really love how he is willing to admit when he isn’t sure of something or that he needs help. What a humble, sweet guy, and what a perfect hero for Jolie!
There’s a lot to love about The Fall Back Plan. If you are a fan of well-crafted plots, endearing characters who are slightly broken but totally awesome, a touch of cozy mystery, and some super swoony moments then this is definitely the book for you!
I purchased a copy of this novel in eBook form from Amazon.com on September 6, 2023, in order to review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
