The Culture of Narcissism: American Life in an Age of Diminishing Expectations by Christopher Lasch
4.0
Read this because Anna Khachiyan from Red Scare podcast mentions it all the time. I came for the takedown of liberals and liberalism and stayed for the indictment of the modern welfare state, the overly therapized professional managerial class (of which I am shamefully a part), and the redemption of such reviled institutions as the family, the community, and loving sexual relationships. It definitely feels dated in places (e.g. reverse racism is not a thing, bruh) and written in an academic style that makes it harder to read than it needs to be, but it is still very much worth reading. Lasch (before he went hard right) shows the importance of blue flame independent thinkers unencumbered by bounds of the "both sides" of disingenuous American culture wars.
