The Truth About Alice by Jennifer Mathieu
5.0
I downloaded this book into my phone and immediately went back to work after summer break, otherwise I think I would have finished much sooner. I wasn't sure I would like this book, rarely do I like books filled with school drama. Maybe it's all the time I spend in real life school drama. But this book was great!
So the premise is Alice has done these terrible things. Her friends just did what she deserved and 3 friends plus a boy with a crush on her explain what she did and why it was so bad. Each chapter switch was also a narrator switch and with each voice you felt their different personalities come out in the text. The nerdy boy used big words, the popular girl used "like" a lot, and each voice was unique but still worked together in the book to fill in the bigger picture of what actually happened.
My favorite thing about the book was how honest it was. The characters acknowledged their flaws admitted they were scared to end up being treated like Alice was. Growing up in a small town really was filled with these challenges.
I wouldn't recommend this book to younger readers. Lots of sex, drugs, drinking, drinking and driving, a slut wall, talk about losing virginity, and abortions. And that is just off the top of my head, I would however recommend it for high school readers because it really does a great job of showing how hurtful things can take in a life of their own.
