I enjoyed the story of Hemi and Belle, and I wish the book had been completely their story.

Ashley’s “gift” seems a pointless aspect to the story.  It’s an interesting idea, but is never used beyond the two books.  This story could have been told without that aspect, and Ashley’s story would be more interesting if she had more opportunities to use her gift.

One further gap for me is that Ashley’s story is set in 1984, but nothing in the book sets that time period other than the lack of cell phones.  A bit about politics, fashion, and music could have brought that time to life.
