Jade Legacy by Fonda Lee

5.0

What an end to one, possibly, the best fantasy series I've ever read. What so impressed me about this series was Lee's ability to grow a myopic gangster-fantasy into a sprawling, multi-generational novel about a singular family's changing dynamics within the, very relevant, context of the politics of globalization, inherited trauma, the importance of cultural heritage and neoliberal economics. What began as something that was a more insular, surface level (albeit very very enjoyable) book, expanded into a series that transcends genre fiction.
