At 30, I Realized I Had No Gender: Life Lessons from a 50-Year-Old After Two Decades of Self-Discovery by Shou Arai
Did not finish book. Stopped at 10%.
I recently read Fine by Rhea Ewing, which I found to be a really thoughtful and nuanced presentation and discussion of ideas around gender. While Ewing does include their feelings about their own relationship to gender, we got dozens of voices talking about it.
Based on the title of this book, I assumed it would be a much more personal narrative to the author's journey with their gender identity.
The first chapter talked about their relationship with their younger partner, but chapter two is where I started to decide this wasn't for me. It was mostly about the physiological differences in the author after taking hormones, and I just didn't like how it was being presented (a lot of weight talk, for one).
I skimmed ahead to chapter 3 to see if it moves on, but it was all about the author being obsessed with how their face was aging and sagging.
I'm also calling them 'chapters' which, yes, the book is divided that way, but they're really more loose collections of four panel comics, which didn't quite fit this big conversation, in my opinion.
Hope this resonates with other people, but I found it difficult to get through.
