The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

5.0

I was between a four and a five on this but rounded up. I didn't love it as much as The Raven Cycle. But on the other hand, it's Maggie. There is something so insidious about her stories - they find a way to delve deep into your heart without you even realizing. You fall in love with her characters and worlds in ways you'd never expect to. The way that The Scorpio Races is constructed is a fairly common narrative: alternating perspectives between two main characters who are presumably going to fall in love. And yet, the subtleties and intricacies of Stiefvater's plot make this familiar narrative into something more than you're expecting. Puck and Sean are so strong in their convictions and their characters (made even stronger by the audiobook narration) that this myth-based and magical story felt real and entirely plausible. The island of Thisby comes alive in Stiefvater's capable hands, and like her other stories that I've read, will stick with me.
