A good modern gothic
A really well considered and planned novel. I love how the author weaves history into the fiction.
I also enjoyed the slow decline of Edmund's mental state and how it juxtaposed with Maud's slow entry into womanhood and some sort of freedom.
Unfortunately, I was expecting a bit more of a horror and didn't find it scary. However, it is seductively creepy in places and has some fantastic gothic elements making it a good modern gothic. Reminding me almost of a blend of the writing of Susan Hill and Shirley Jackson.
