The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Annie Barrows, Mary Ann Shaffer

4.0

Before I read this book, I watched the film and may I first say, both adaptations are brilliant on their own. They shouldn't be compared (but will be in this review) as they have their own stories to tell and do so in their own way. I understand it must be difficult to make a film about letters being sent back and forth without having to change concepts of the story but as the filmmakers changed so much of the book, I say better to consume and review separately.

So what should you come to expect in this book or film? What sets them apart?

If you prefer a realistic period drama, watch the film. It demands to remain true to historical pieces before it and is somewhat lighthearted compared to the book. If you prefer a more dramatic period drama, read the book. It never stops with its dramatic turns and twists, strange devices and unique characters. The letter style suits the book more, even if the reader might feel spoonfed sometimes, and less so in the film which focuses on flashbacks for storytelling.

If you prefer more prominent romantic leads, watch the film. The love interests play more of a role in this adaptation and you see more of their character arcs but if you prefer just Juliet's independent story, then read the book.

Read or watch the other adaptation to see a completely different side of characters such as Amelia, Kit and Mark and get introduced to or watch disappear characters like Susan, Sophie and John Booker. To read after was offputting slightly as you almost believed you read the wrong name beside 'that' piece of dialogue.

I hope this helps you in your final decision of which order to consume them and that you enjoy them both for what they are.
