Superman: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? by Alan Moore

5.0

The original (I reread this in conjunction with reading Batman: Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader) is still better, but I've always liked Moore more than Gaiman. I just like how Moore uses all the major players, but ultimately, Superman has to stand for something better and doesn't belong in a violent and grim & gritty era. The extra stories are both good: I hadn't noticed before that both involve alien plants taking Superman down. Both are tightly plotted. "Jungle Line" mostly relies on the effective purple prose to set a mood, while "For the Man Who Has Everything" is more plot-driven. Moore's vision of Superman's Kryptonian life is moving, and the battles with Mongul are terrifically brutal. And great art through all the chapters.
