I find these books deeply satisfying - they scratch an itch I didn't know I have for romances that feel grounded in some sort of reality and that teach me something about a time period I don't know much about, and the characters always feel so fully realized and fun. I love learning about the British suffragist movement from the 1800s, and this book dealt with class issues and how to effect lasting systemic change in a way that I thoroughly enjoyed. I appreciate how this series delves into what it actually takes to make a relationship works and ensures that things are tied up in a bow only when the couple has really grappled with the obstacles in their way. Hattie is endearing precisely because she tries to reckon with her spoiled upbringing, and Lucien is just mysterious and gruff enough that the slow burn felt realistic. The sex scenes were vibrant and steamy and usual, and the friendship between the four women is always a highlight. I'll be really sad when I finish this series.
