Ophelia After All by Racquel Marie

5.0

What the HECK, my January reads have been SO GOOD...

This book made me sob. At first I was teary. Then full sobbing for like 30 minutes as I listened.

This isn't a romance. It's a young adult story of Ophelia, who's getting ready for prom and graduation with her friends. She has a friend group, she has a crush, she has an ex-boyfriend who might want to ask her to prom. She has parents she's very close to, best friends she loves, but she feels alone because... how does she open up about something she can't even really admit to herself / isn't sure about?

This book just... hit me in the feels. Maybe because I'm older and I remember the uncertainty of high school... I remember thinking the friends, the crushes I had, the parties I went to, prom and graduation - those were THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS. And of course with time and perspective, you know it's not. But at the time it's your whole world. So Ophelia's feelings and fears are 100% valid but I want to just like HELP her, and take her fear and anxiety away.

I was also getting so frustrated with her friends and her parents, right alongside her. As she's slowly coming to terms with her feelings/crush/sexuality, she's realizing everyone has kind of put her in a box. "Boy crazy Ophelia." And she's worried what stepping out of that box means for her relationships with her friends and her parents. Maybe it's because I'm a mom now but it just made me CRYYYY.
