A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki

Naming one’s favorite book is extremely difficult when you read a lot and are bad at making decisions, but the title that always comes to my mind is A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. My original review is filled with praise, but it´s been a long while and my memories had gotten hazy, so it was time for a reread. Thankfully I found Ozeki’s story as fascinating as I did the first time around. It’s insane how many subjects she can fit in a single book, how she creates characters that seems to leap out of the pages and ties their lives together in the most beautiful ways. I need to continue my Ozeki reread as soon as I can. I might honestly say that she is the most talented author I have read from. Oh how I’m longing for a new novel from her!

A Tale for the time being is the 70th book I´ve read this year and it´s my favourite out of all of them.

I feel like this book really changed me, the way I view things, how I think. It helped me to understand violence, bullying, depression, suicide and war. It´s a grotesque and beautiful story about the way writing can combine two lifes no matter the time or place.

Time is a big theme in this book as you can guess by the title. It´s something I hadn´t really thought about before and Ruth Ozeki introduced me to completely new ideas. Through this book I also learned a lot about Japan, but most of all it taught about life, humanity, good and bad.

I really don´t have anything bad so say about this because A Tale for the Time Being felt like the perfect book for me. I came to love the main character Nao so reading her diary and thoughts broke my heart. I´ve heard many say that they didn´t really care for the other main character Ruth, but I was as interested in her storyline as I was in the story of Nao. And of course I have to mention Nao´s grandmother Jiko, I wish Ozeki would dedicate a whole book for her story.

I hope this inspires some of you to read this wonderful novel! I will definetely be reading this again and again in the future and I´m also really exited to read Ozeki´s other books.
