Tehrangeles by Porochista Khakpour

4.0

Imagine Keeping up with the Kardashians but with an Iranian family who prided themselves for creating Pizzabomme, a ready-to-eat, easy-to-prepare pizza.

Tehrangeles is Porochista Khakpour's newest offering which is a real-life community of Persians located in Westwood, LA. It's a portmanteau of Iran's capital, Tehran, and Los Angeles.

After reading the author's acknowledgement piece, I realized why this one felt so familiar and that's because Tehrangeles is somehow inspired by Louisa May Alcott's Little Women and all the parallels made sense after.

We have four Milani daughters - Violet (the supermodel), Roxanna (the influencer), Mina (the overachiever), and Haylee (a fitness freak) - and each of the were written with their own set of strengths and peculiarities. Mina is my bias in the end because my personal belief in life aligned with what she believes as well + she stans TWICE, too.

This book is set before, during, and a sneak peek of the after the COVID-19 pandemic and reading how this ultra-rich family who is considered as LA royalty suffer and adjust after the world succumbed to the highly-infectious coronavirus felt raw.

I liked how Porochista highlighted the reality about family dynamics especially those who have a public image to protect and in this one we were given an all-access to the hyperactive dysfunctional Milanis of Tehrangeles.

The writing style is easy to follow and there are lines that are worthy of a chuckle but what really captured me with this one are those parts where the author sublty focused on how important it is to accept one's true self.

Funny, somehow relatable, and full of heart, Tehrangeles is the next tragicomic modern family saga that you'll surely love if you enjoy the reality TV show by the Kardashians. Four stars!!
