The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins

4.0

And now I have read all of Hawkins thrillers. I think this one is up there with The Villa for me, I enjoyed it quite a bit. Though in hindsight, very little happens. The story is about discovering some of the characters’ secrets, but this doesn’t really happen until the last few chapters. The bulk of the book until then is spent in the past, through letters written by the matriarch of the family recounting her life (and crimes), and I could see that not being enough for some readers because it’s very much for our benefit, not for the characters’s or to push the plot forward. Fortunately for me, they were my fave part of the book. The character’s voice was great, I quite enjoyed her, and I think this was immensely helped by the great audiobook narrator as well. (in fact I read all 4 thrillers on audiobook and they were all excellently done and probably contributed to my liking of them). That said, I also just enjoyed the vibes of the novels, with the money-hungry old family, the isolated mansion, the bitter family members and the hostility of having someone not their class in their midst. Very Knives Out in a way. Good, quick, simple fun.
