This book was originally published in 1989 which explains a lot about the thoughts and descriptions of clients provided. A lot of Yalom’s thoughts regarding his clients, in particular when physically his clients he is fat phobic and derogatory as was considered appropriate and normal in that time period and had not been reviewed. However, Yalom also openly shared times he questioned himself, his thoughts and his skills. To read of a well considered psychiatrist share his feelings of faults when working is always reassuring to a young therapist, as is the reassurance sometimes uncovering the final solution for a person at that particular time is also reassuring once again. A lot of the stories and choices of how to support clients has vastly changed since its publishing. Would I recommend this? Generally not. But did I find some value for myself? Yes I did.
