Drowning by T.J. Newman
5.0
It’s only six minutes after takeoff when Flight 1421 crashes into the ocean. During the evacuation, an engine explodes, jet fuel spills, and catches fire. Those that hadn’t escaped are forced to close the door and stay aboard the plane. When the plane sinks to the bottom of the Pacific, they’re trapped inside.
Below the surface, Will, and his daughter, Shannon, are fighting for their lives. Their only chance of survival is an unprecedented rescue…led by Shannon’s mom, and Will’s separated wife. Will she be able to pull it off and save those dearest to her? Or will they be entombed at the bottom of the ocean forever?
I had this book on my list since it came out. When I saw it was on-sale, I knew I had to snag a copy. The timing could have been better as I was about three days from flying across the country, but hey my anxiety normally has anxiety so why not.
This book immediately dropped you into the action and didn’t let up. I started crying almost immediately and did periodically throughout the book. Anytime kids are involved I tend to get a bit emotional, and this was a life and death situation. I absolutely loved that Shannon’s mom, Chris, had such an amazing career and she was the owner of the company. It’s details like this that really draw me into books and hold my attention. I ran a few of the technical details by my plane aficionado husband, and he agreed with them, so I wasn’t surprised to see that the author was a former flight attendant – she knows her stuff and it made for a great book.
I absolutely loved this book, it’s the best suspense book I’ve read this year. I highly recommend it – but maybe not right before getting on a plane like I did.
Five stars.
